A Fascinating History

Set in the heart of Sedgeford this splendid pub was born in the reign of King William IV around the 1830’s. Purpose built by publican William Brockbank, it quickly became the village’s warm hearted pub as it is today. Throughout the 19th century locals and travellers found solace and cheer beneath its beams, a timeless testament to Norfolks rural hospitality.

Take a walk with us, back in time

If ever there was a place that whispered of England’s enchanting past, it’s the King William IV in the delightful village of Sedgeford. Nestled in the gentle, undulating landscape of west Norfolk, this charming country inn is more than just a pub, it’s a slice of history wrapped in flint walls and warmed by the soft glow of a fireside pint.

Built in the early 1830s, during the reign of the very monarch it takes its name from good King William IV, the “Sailor King”. The inn was the brainchild of a chap named William Brockbank. Mr Brockbank wasn’t just pouring pints, he was crafting a community institution. Purpose-built and proud, the pub became the social anchor of the village, an ever-welcoming stop for farmers, travellers, and local characters with muddy boots and stories to tell.

One can so easily imagine the clatter of hooves outside, the swirl of capes as folk hurried in from the cold, the low hum of laughter mixing with the scent of ale and pipe smoke.

Through the Victorian era and beyond, the King William IV saw generations gather, raising glasses for harvests, weddings, homecomings and even the odd ghost story whispered over a final nightcap.

Over the years, the inn has evolved with grace. While the world outside bustled into modernity, this Sedgeford gem retained its soul. Today, she stands beautifully refurbished yet deeply authentic, her timber beams, flagstone floors and roaring fires echoing with the lives of those who came before.

And now she plays host to guests from far and wide, offering hearty fare, fine Norfolk ales, and rooms above for those who’d rather not leave too soon. It’s the kind of place that hugs you gently with history, and invites you, quite irresistibly, to stay just a little longer.
